Just one of those rare nights where I can’t seem to get to sleep. Not stressed or anything, just randomly not tired. So here’s a list of cars I’m considering replacing my Sonic with that Jay Lauer and I put together earlier, arranged by brand:

Audi

-A5

-A4

BMW

-135

-335

Cadillac

-ATS

-CTS-V

Chevrolet

-Corvette (C6)

-Camaro SS (C5)

-Camaro Turbo (C6)

Ford

-Mustang Ecoboost

Hyundai

-Genesis Coupe

Infinity

-G37

Lexus

-IS250

Mazda

-Miata (NC)

Nissan

-370Z

Pontiac

-Solstice GXP

Saturn

-Sky Redline

Scion

-FR-S

Subaru

-BRZ

My requirements: RWD (maybe an exception for AWD), manual or good DCT, good at autocross, <$15k ideal, <$20k preferred, <$25k maybe doable. $30k could be possible, but unlikely. 2008 or newer preferred, no more than 10 years old, <60k miles preferred.

NC Miata is the current front runner. Cheap, reliable, great at autocross.

I have a lot of cars to test drive...

For 25-30 you could find a clean sl600. It might be reliable... Or, for 20 you could find a nice S600 and have 7500 set aside for maintenance

Heard good things about 370z from a track instructor. Handling is comparable to miata and has enough power to keep up with the big boys on straights.

Brand new factory pads apparently lasted a whole racing season, which was pretty impressive too.

Unless you are an extreme outlier, I’d go ahead and cross the IS250 off that list. It’s probably the most reliable on the list, but from everything I’ve seen and heard, it will also be the less fun. The IS350 on the other hand is worth a look.

That's the complete opposite of a good autocross car. It also lacks the manual and DCT requirement

Yes, but V12

But it's the size and mass of an aircraft carrier

True... It does feel smaller and lighter that it actually is though.

So it feels like a battleship instead of a carrier?

Try battlecruiser. C6 corvette, even in stock, pre ls3 form, is still the best handling car I've ever driven. That would be my choice from the above list. Reasonably cheap too.

I will own a Corvette someday, but that’s a big leap and a bit pricey, and since this would theoretically be my only car I’m not too keen on driving a Corvette through winter.

Ah. I definitely get you. I drove one as my dd for 4 months, and I definitely would not want to drive one through winter.
